How can it be 2006?

I've been marveling over the thought that it's 2006 for the last two days. Yeah, in some ways it's just one more year in the early 2000s, but in one very special way, it's so much more.

It's twenty years since I graduated from high school. And that just seems so... strange. Twenty years sounds like a really long time. But it doesn't feel like that long a time.

Maybe it wouldn't seem so weird if I didn't have a daily reminder of my high school days, in the form of my husband. (We met at 10th grade band camp, for new readers who may not know.) It's not that high school seems recent, exactly, but it doesn't seem like twenty years ago, either.

This is blowing my mind even more than turning 37 and having a baby are!

Well, happy 2006, everyone. It's the first year of the 21st century that has freaked me right out, practically before it's even started!

You know what's funny is I was tweaking over this earlier tonight. I've a friend who is teaching Freshman composition and I it struck me that it's been 20 years since I took freshman comp, and then like a rumbling bad thing it hit me that that means I graduated high school 20 years ago. I feel the same way. It doesn't feel like yesterday, but twenty years? How is that even possible. I just don't feel anything like "almost 40." It's really bizarre.

When some of my old classmates and friends started contacting me about our 20th reunion in 07 I couldn't believe it (I turn 37 in '06). It reminded me of The Big Chill, I thought "I can't be that old!" I never actually watched The Big Chill because, well, it was about old people. My parents watched it, not me. So I looked it up on the Internet and guess what... all those guys were 30-31 in that movie. So we're even waaay older than the guys in The Big Chill. That is CRAZY!!!! CRAZY!!!!!!

I graduated h.s. in '84. My sister is an '86 graduate. We had this same "it just can't be" conversation at Christmas. It be.

Happy New Year, Susie!

I stumbled upon your website a few years back while I was looking for pics of "red houses". I've followed your blog ever since. What strikes me as funny is that I ALSO met my husband at band camp! It was the summer before I was going into grade 9 and he into grade 11; he played trumpet/tuba and I played French horn. It creeps me out to think that it was also 20 years ago (summer of '85). We've been married for 8, but I've known him for 20 years! Yiiikes!!!
