Getting Ready to Paint, Spring 2000

The living room waits expectantlyThis is the living room before the project began. Notice the electric baseboard heater below the window. We have these in every room in the house, and now that we have gas heat we are planning to take them all out. In the middle of the floor you see our tools for patching the walls and painting.

Testing the colorWe chose pale yellow ("Icy Lemonade" by Sherwin Williams) for the walls in the living room. I painted a patch of the color on the wall so we could test it. (You can also see the other heater in the room, under the front windows.)

Patched wall 1Here you see the place where the first baseboard heater was removed (below the window). Once it was out, Marty filled in the hole from the wiring with a drywall patch (the darker gray part by the floor).

One of our biggest concerns in this project is protecting the floor. We worked too hard on it last summer to mess it up now. So we taped brown paper down on the entire floor. It has been a challenge to keep Ziggy from shredding it before the project is complete.

Patched wall 2Here's another patch -- this one fills in the hole where the control for the electric heat used to be. Every room in the house has one or two of these heaters and one of these controls beside the door. We're going to be getting rid of these things for a long time to come.

You can also see the test of the yellow paint in this picture -- although it looks a little darker here than it does in real life.
