Thoughts from Moz
Casa do Gaiato

May 19, 2001: I arrived at Escola da Casa da Gaiato yesterday. Itīs a school for orphan boys but other kids from Boane bus in and school there also.

Iīll eat my meals with the students in the cafeteria which is beautiful and spotless and the food is really really good. Light and healthy, not oily, like most places would make. The school is Catholic and is funded by, I think, the government of Finland (like Moamba). I have a shower and flushing toilet. My view is of the mountans from my bed. The window is next to my bed.

The school is in the mountains. It has itīs own farm that raises rabbits and duck and cows, etc, for food at the school. Everyone is so kind and sweet.

[Note: Rebekah still teaches at Casa do Gaiato, but she now lives in the nearby village of Massaca. These pictures were taken when she was living at the school.]

The road to and from the school.
My house at Casa do Gaiato, house #3. I have a room and a private bathroom along the back. So my windows look onto the hills.
The church. The boys pray here every evening at 5:30. It's beautiful inside.

The bus takes teachers and students back and forth three times a day.

Poinsettias grow here like weeds. The tree in front with red flowers is a poinsettia.

This picture is taken from outside my house.

Two buildings of classrooms at Casa do Gaiatos. Beyond is the lagoon where I saw an alligator.
Near: House of the youngest boys. The school nurse has a room in this house. So does the Sister.

Far: House where laundry is done. Everything is ironed for you too! I'm in heaven!

In the foreground (under bushes): a cage for pigeons. The pigeons come and go freely.

In the background, three buildings:

  • Left: House #2
  • Center: House #3 (my house when I lived at the school)
  • Right (white roof): Carpenter area

Next: Students at Casa do Gaiato

Back: Moamba
