I've been following Sonal's lead for the last couple of weeks. The Aimee Mann CD she made me has been played into the ground (and I'm still not tired of it). After reading her guestbook entry last week, I got the old Cake CD out (Prolonging the Magic) and played it for a few days. I still love it as much as ever. Then I played the CD versions of the old M/K mix tapes. And I'm listening to the new REM, Reveal.

This REM CD didn't really grab me the first couple of times through, but I'm definitely liking it after the first week or so. I had read some reviews that said it was much better than Up, and I can't say I agree with that. It certainly doesn't hold a candle to Automatic for the People. But then, it's supposed to be different. REM's a different band now, making music in a different time. So what do you expect? Of course it's going to be different. After several listens, I quite like it.

Other stuff: A Moment of Peace, Ricky Martin's La Historia, DMB's Everyday (still), Indigo Girls Retrospective. And, as of this past weekend, three excellent mix tapes by Marel Trout, called Don't Try this at Home. I'm really enjoying these, and I imagine I'll have more to say about 'em in the next week or so.

Listening to a bunch of stuff. I'm making some tapes for Rebekah, who is a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique (and a former student of mine). She has a cassette player out there so when I write her I usually send her some music. This time I'm sending her a tape of the Aimee Mann mix Sonal made; a tape of Never The Same, a mix I traded for at Art of the Mix; my desert island tape (seems appropriate); and a tape of the new Dave Matthews Band album, with the new REM album on the back.

There's a Mulder/Krycek song on Everyday, the new one from DMB. It's called "What You Are." If I were ever to make another M/K mix, I'm pretty sure this one would be on it.

What you are
Is the beast in a lover's arms
What you are
Is the devil in the sweet, sweet kiss
What you are
Is missing a piece
What you are
Is a puzzle to me

What am I listening to? Actually, one of my very own mix tapes from waaaay back (Fall, 1997), As an Angel Runs to Ground. I'm playing my tape in the car these days, really grooving on some old favorites, and anticipating a CD version of this mix that someone made for me. (I hear it'll be on its way soon.)

This mix is subtitled Songs for Mulder and Krycek, and it's a soundtrack for a Mulder/Krycek fanfiction story. But the funny thing was, I made the mix before I wrote any of the stories. But the story is in the mix. It's a narrative tape.

So that's what I'm playing at the moment. But I will make a prediction -- by Friday of this week, I will be listening to the new REM album, Reveal. It was released today, and my copy has already been shipped by Amazon. Sweet!

Lovesong
The Cure

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you

Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you

Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

Driving with one hand on the wheel
Ordering luck with every meal
Feeding on hope again
Never mind how small a portion

    Aimee Mann,
Driving with One Hand on the Wheel

So please, please, please
Let me, let me, let me
Let me get what I want
This time

    The Smiths,
Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

At my request, you take me in
In that tenderness, I am floating away
No certainty, nothing to rely on
Holding still for a moment
What a moment this is
Oh, for a moment of forgetting,
A moment of bliss…

I can hear the distant thunder
Of a million unheard souls
Watch each one reach for creature comfort
For the filling of their holes

In the blood of Eden
Lie the woman and the man
With the man in the woman
And the woman in the man
In the blood of Eden
We wanted the union
Of the woman and the man...

What I'm listening to today: Day and Night, a mix I made a few years ago.

This is one of my favorite mixes of all time. It came out of a period that was one of the true golden ages of SusieMixes, along with others such as "Green Cheese" and "Behind the Scenes." I love this mix, "Day and Night." I had forgotten what it was really about until I listened again recently, and then it all came back to me. It is still very special to me, even years later. Isn't it funny how a collection of songs can capture a moment in time, an emotional state, and recall it so clearly for you later?

Cry Like an Angel
S. Colvin - J. Leventhal

The streets of my town are not what they were
They are haloed in anger, bitter and hurt
And it's not so you'd notice but it's a sinister thing
Like the wheels of ambition at the christening

So I went out walking on the streets of the dead
With a chip on my shoulder and a voice in my head
It said you have been brought here, though you don't know what for
Well the mystery train is coming right to your door

And I hear you calling, you don't have to call so loud
I see you falling and you don't have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we can take you where
You can cry like an angel

There were high school night dances when we played stump the band
We were raising each other in a strange land
There were hard pills to swallow but we drank 'em all down
Oh the nights were too short then, now they're a little too long

I hear you calling, you don't have to call so loud
I see you falling, you don't have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we can take you where
You can shout out in anger, you can laugh like a fool
You can cry like an angel

So look homeward baby, keep your eyes on the sky
They will never forgive you so don't ask them to try
This is your party, I know it's not your ideal
May we all find salvation in professions that heal

I hear you calling, you don't have to call so loud
I see you falling and you don't have to walk so proud
You can run all night but we can take you where
You can shout out an answer, you can laugh like a fool
You can call up to heaven, we'll be listening to you
You can sing hallelujah, you can fly like a bird
You can cry like angel when there are no words

What I'm listening to lately:

  • Just Push Play, Aerosmith. My favorite song on the new album is the title track, "Just Push Play." I would quote the lyrics on the page here, but they're just too asinine. That doesn't stop me from loving this song like nobody's business.

  • Everyday, Dave Matthews Band. Still loving this new one from DMB. Favorite songs are "Everyday" and "The Space Between," but I really like 'em all.

  • Boom Chaka Laka Laka, a funk mix by Steve Raglin. This is an awesome mix of 1970s funk that I got in a trade on Art of the Mix. My favorite songs from this one are Parliament's "Give Up the Funk" (accept no substitutes!!!) and Bill Withers' "Using Me." All I can say to Steve is, play that funky music, white boy! Thank you!
