Music I Bought in England
I didn't do much shopping for music over there, but I did take a turn through HMV one rainy afternoon. Here are a few things I found:
The Best of Ricky Martin, a (sort of) English-language greatest hits. I quite like most of these songs, so I was happy to find it. As far as I know, this is unavailable in the US.
The Best of Boney M, which is listed at Amazon UK as an import. I found it on clearance for a great price.
The Brassed Off soundtrack. Love that Yorkshire brass.
A special version of The Marshall Mathers LP with some extra tracks and some videos (I can't find a link to the one I got).
And a 2-disc blues collection with a bunch of great artists on it (again, can't find a link).

I decided not to take anything I couldn't replace if I lost it. So that's why all the home-cooked ones on the list are by me, nobody else.

Yes, yes, yes!!!
Just picked up the Moulin Rouge 2 soundtrack and I am happy to report it is well worth the money if you are a fan of the film. I listened to about half of it while running errands at lunch and was laughing aloud at some of my favorite songs from the movie that weren't included on the original soundtrack released last year. "The Pitch" (you may recognize this as "Spectacular Spectacular") is great, as are "Like a Virgin" and the movie-version of "Come What May." I could do without the heavy Moby-wannabe remix on "Someday I'll Fly Away," but it's certainly not unlistenable.
Lots more Jim Broadbent on this CD than on the first one, which helps to make up for the lesser amount of Ewan McGregor. There's even a little Richard Roxburgh, which absolutely makes my day.
I also got the Indigo Girls (natch) but haven't played it yet. I like to be able to pay attention when I listen to a new one by them, and lunchtime errands and traffic aren't very conducive to that. However, I'm sure I'll have a chance to get to know it intimately on that long plane ride a couple of days from now.

Saturday night we were out at Bar in New Haven, and the music was Nirvana, Unplugged. I love that disc and I hadn't heard it in a long time. I expect I'll be listening to my copy soon.
This morning on the way to work I played the first half of a mix CD my brother made for me. It's mostly alternative metal, and I only know a couple of songs on the CD. There's some interesting stuff on there though:
99 Red Balloons - Goldfinger Black and White - Static X What's My Age Again? - Blink 182 Alive - POD Du Hast - Rammstein Superhero - Reef Wait and Bleed - Slipknot Chop Suey! - System of a Down Why Don't You Get a Job? - The Offspring Nothing - Unloco Reckoning - Unloco Breakdown - Foo Fighters Bodies - Drowning Pool Mighty Penis Lazer - Big Dumb Face
That last one is not to be confused with the band Beast Penis.
In other news, the new Indigo Girls CD comes out tomorrow; I am very psyched.

Sometimes I think there is no song in this world more perfect than the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

Driving in this morning I was listening to one of my favorite new CDs of the last couple of years, The Wallflowers, Breach. I'd forgotten how much I like this CD! I especially love the lyrics.
Now I'm 10 miles in the deep and mighty blue sea Looking back, towards a long white beach burnin' up into yellow flames And I just wave back like a little boy up on a pony in a show 'cause I can't fix something this complex any more than I can build a rose
So just keep on letting go 'cause I must be close to being delivered for the first time
Yesterday at the gym it was Under the Table and Dreaming by DMB. That's a great album for working out.
And last night on the way home I was playing The Marshall Mathers LP for the first time in a couple of weeks. He still cracks me up.
"Yo, Em... don't kill no one this time!"
"Aight!"

Driving in this morning:
Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds / Mbube (1939)
The Weavers / Wimoweh (1956)
Cornershop / Brimful of Asha
Gipsy Kings / Volaré
Jonatha Brooke / Fatso
Sam Cooke / Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha
Ignatius Jones / Rhumba De Burros
Ladysmith Black Mambazo / Khwishi Khwishi
I love the sounds of the South African vocal groups, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Evening Birds. That deep bass line makes the high vocals just seem to soar. Gorgeous.
