5. Peter Gabriel, Us (1992)
I thought I could never love another Peter
Gabriel album the way I love So (1986), but when it came time to choose between So
and Us for this list, Us won out. This is an amazing collection of
songs -- exotic, dark, sexy, hopeful. Elegant, gentle songs like "Love to Be
Loved," "Blood of Eden," and "Washing of the Water" are balanced
by the knowing sexiness of "Steam" and "Kiss that Frog." And as
always, Peter Gabriel's lyrics are challenging and beautiful:
In the swirling, curling storm of desire
Unuttered words hold fast;
With reptile tongue, the lightning lashes
Towers built to last;
Darkness creeps in like a thief
And offers no relief;
Why are you shaking like a leaf?
Come on, come talk to me.
"Come Talk to Me"
The songs on this album reflect Peter Gabriel's
interest in world music, featuring guest artists playing unusual instruments from too many
cultures to name. Yet the music never overpowers the words, the lyrics that explore
the darkness of love, desire, and loss. And the songs explore not just the darkness,
but also hope. |
