A tribute to summer. I made this one in early August, 2001. Some of these songs have a summertime sound to them -- the kd lang songs, and the ones by the Beach Boys (natch). Some of them are what I was playing this summer. It was a season of Bob Marley, Paul Simon, and Dave Matthews Band.

I really like how this one flows. You know how sometimes you get the order of a mix just right, where it makes perfect sense to you every time you listen to it? And every time you leave one section of the disc and enter a new section, you feel the change like a change in the air from summer to fall? That's what this one is like for me.

There was so much going on this summer. "Tangerine Speedo" reminds me of when my father, brother, and sister were up here in June. Elisabeth and I played the Charlie's Angel's soundtrack in the car on our way up to Kathy John's. The Orange Peels and The Wondermints are finds from my trip to Waterbury with Laura on one of the hottest days of the year. The Curtis Mayfield song was also peripherally related to that trip. The Brian Wilson, Wondermints, and Paul Simon songs remind me of the Paul Simon and Brian Wilson concert in early July, and how sweet it was of my brother to take me to it. Some of the songs are related to things that were going on in my friends' lives this summer, like how "Dancing Nancies" and "Is This Love?" are dedicated to Maria's new relationship.

I took this one down to Sonal when I went to visit in August. There's a bunch of stuff on here that is specific to us, but the actual Susie/Sonal section begins with "I've Been High" and goes through "So You Are A Star." The first time we listened to it together, we both started crying as soon as that part of the CD started, although I hadn't warned her about it at all. Weird.

I also played this one a lot after September 11. Surprisingly enough, it translated very well for me. This was what I listened to most in the weeks following the attacks.
