In
April 2004 we enjoyed the start of spring in Munich. The
park and beer gardens started to get busy and green. We
were also visited by Kathryn, a friend of ours from graduate
school.
Here
are some pictures from April, including the English Garden,
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Munich's Leopoldstrasse by night,
and the Glenleiten Open Air Museum. Click on each picture
to see a larger version.

A swan in the English Garden.

Black swans in the English Garden.

Feeding the birds beside the Kleinhesselohersee in the
English Garden.

Budding chestnut trees in the North Side of the English
Garden. By the end of April, these trees were full of leaves!

April 3, 2004
The first day of Kathryn's visit. A flower stall in the
Viktualienmarkt.

Susie and Kathryn enjoying dinner in the Augustiner Keller
that same evening (now a first-day tradition!).

A few days later. The beginning of a beautiful (if short-lived)
friendship: a girl and her Steckerlfisch.

On that Bavarian tablecloth, I almost expect the Steckerlfisch
to belt out "WE ARE!"

April 8, 2004
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, by night. Taken during the Night
Watchman's Tour, a must for any visit to Rothenburg.

Early the next morning, we got up and walked around the
foggy medieval city. Here you can see one of the city gates,
and the wall that surrounds the old town.

Marty and Kathryn climbing up in the city wall.

A view along the wall.

The Rathaus (on the left) through the fog.

All the fountains were dressed for Easter with greenery
and painted eggs (it was Easter weekend).

An old-time manual doorbell.

Another gate to the city in the fog.

The manhole, or "eye of the needle," from the
same gate.

Even the regular doors in Rothenburg are picturesque.

See?

A Rothenburg citizen takes the morning air.

The oldest house in Rothenburg -- now a tavern known as
"zur Höll" (or "to Hell," as in,
"go to Hell").

In case you ever wondered what the tablecloth in Hell looked
like.

We weren't the only tourists out that morning!

One of the many towers within Rothenburg's city walls. We
passed through this one several times since it was on the
way to our hotel.

The pension where we stayed in Rothenburg, Pension
Freund. It's located right inside the wall. As the name
suggests, it's a friendly place. We recommend it!

And back in Munich...
What
month would be complete without pictures of Ziggy?

Enjoying the spring sunshine out the living room window.

April 24, 2004
Leopoldstrasse, Munich. We were walking home from the
movies late Saturday night, and I took a few pictures.
First,
the Siegestor (Victory Arch). Doesn't every city have
one of these?

The Walking Man was also out for a stroll that night.
Not someone you'd want to meet unexpectedly in a dark
alley.

This used to be a cinema, but now it houses a T-Mobile shop
and a men's lingerie store. But I like the neon.

They have forty or so buildings from around Bavaria, all
set up so you can see how people lived in the olden days.

You can walk into any building on the property, even the
houses, and see how it looked when people were living and
working there.

Unfortunately I only managed to take pictures of the chickens.

But they were very entertaining!

Enjoy!
