Aimee Mann Show
Muffathalle, Munich
February 27, 2003

Last night Aimee Mann played the Muffathalle in Munich. I was in the tenth row, and took a few pictures (below).

The show was great, and the audience, although reserved, responded really well to the songs from Magnolia. The encores were "Driving Sideways," "Invisble Ink," "Telescope" (in response to audience request), "Fourth of July," and "Deathly."

I would've loved to hear "Red Vines," but otherwise the show was fantastic.

She spoke often during the show, greeting the audience with several sentences in German early on (I heard several approving comments around my seat) and talking about the last time she was in Munich, a few years ago. She said she enjoyed herself and that the show was good, and then asked whether anyone was in the audience who had seen her the first time. Only a few people yelled out, and she seemed a little taken aback, joking that maybe the show wasn't as good as she'd thought, if only three people came back.

She also talked about the new album, Lost in Space, saying that many of the songs were about people who felt disconnected from life and turned to addiction to help themselves feel different, or better. Then she told a short anecdote about a reviewer who wrote, "Why does Aimee keep writing songs about the record company? For instance, 'This is How it Goes.'" She then said she wasn't sure why anyone thought it was about the record company, since the chorus begins, "It's ALL ABOUT DRUGS." She joked that she'd thought that was pretty clear, but maybe not clear enough.

The show was great. Aimee had good rapport with the audience and the band really rocked. Paul Bryan (the bassist) opened for Aimee with about five songs, and had a nice response from the audience.

The set was as follows (thanks to Frank, from the Aimee Mann message board):

The audience was divided into a seated area in front and a standing area behind. I was in the seated area.

The crowd was somewhat reserved, although they clapped enthusiastically after every song.

Not one person stood up to watch the show in the front (seated) section. They stayed in their seats until it was all over and time to go home.

During "Deathly," the last song of the encore, one lone dreadlocked girl finally got up to dance.
