Hauptbahnhof, Munich
November 8, 2002

I took these pictures of Munich's Hauptbahnhof (central train station) on a Friday night around 11pm. Munich has a nice train station with a huge food court and lots of shops. I especially like the way the lights reflect off the smooth surfaces. The "Trink Coca-Cola" sign is particularly appealing to me for some reason.

I like train stations, and enjoy taking pictures of them. Some of my pictures of Grand Central Station in NY are linked from this journal entry.

The west entrance to the Hauptbahnhof. This faces Bayerstraße and Goethestraße. Marty is standing near the top of the escalator in the center of the picture (he is under the "n" in Hauptbahnhof). Above, you can see the back of the Coca-Cola sign through the window.

Inside, looking across the platforms. This reminds me of my first visit to Munich in 1988. I was traveling with my friend Doug, and we stopped in Munich when we left Prague. We were on our way to Amsterdam, and we had 8 hours to kill in Munich. We went to the Hofbräuhaus and the Englischer Garten. When we caught the train to Amsterdam after midnight that night, the train station was even emptier than this.

Trains waiting to go. I enjoy the neon signs in the train station, like that Grundig sign on the back wall. The Deutsche Bahn trains are painted a very cheerful red.

A fruit stand in the train station. There is also a large food court with almost any type of food available at different stands. I sometimes eat lunch at the train station even if I'm just passing by, not going on the train.

Checking the schedule.

Looking across the Hauptbahnhof.

I love how the lights reflect at the train station.
