Hellabrun Tierpark (Zoo), Munich
November 20, 2002

When Susie and Jim came to visit, we went to the Hellabrun Zoo here in Munich. It's a nice, big zoo with lots of animals, interestingly organized by the animals' geographic origins. Apparently the zoo was deisgned as the world's first "geo-zoo" in 1928.

The zoo had a huge variety of deer and other horned quadrupeds. There must have been at least fifty different varieties.

These little deer live in a large enclosure beside the petting zoo. (And no, I don't think it was an evil petting zoo.)

Susie and Jim checking out the pelicans.

The pelicans.

A yak.

Can't remember what these are called, but they were huge and very active.

Action shot!

Hello, who are you?

Penguins!

We visited the seals at feeding time.

They were barking like dogs; we heard them from across the zoo.

They are fun to watch swim. The cold water didn't seem to deter them.

This peakock (Pfau, in German) was wandering the zoo sidewalks.

Cheetahs.

Most of the animals were in large enclosures like this.

Here's a red panda hanging out in the top of a tree.

His red panda pal decided to go for a little walk through the habitat.

He looked so soft and fuzzy.

I can't remember what type of bird this is, but it walked right up to us.

It had iridescent blue feathers on its chest. Just lovely.

The elephants were entertaining even though it was not time for the daily "elephant training" demonstration (2 pm).

Their trunks are so fascinating. I can't imagine having such a flexible nose!

Lots of elephant pictures because I loved them!

I really could have watched the elephants all day.

The giraffes were also very beautiful.

They move with such grace.

Even from the back they look good!

I liked them as much as the elephants.

I wish I could have taken pictures of the monkeys and apes. They were incredible, but the enclosures didn't really lend themselves to good shots.

In the cafeteria, a very fancy coffee machine that warms the cups beforehand with a huge blast of steam.

At the U-Bahn station nearby, we saw an animal who was possibly campaigning for admission to Hellabrun.
