Innsbruck and Hall in Tirol, Austria
November 1 - 3, 2002

We made a weekend Ausflug (excursion) to Tirol, with a visit to Innsbruck and a small town called Hall in Tirol.

The Golden Roof is the most famous of Innsbruck's sights. You can see a close-up here.

In the old city (Altstadt), looking towards the Golden Roof.

Innsbruck's Altstadt is picturesque with cobbled streets and painted buildings.

An alley (Gasse) in the Altstadt.

Innsbruck stands on the Inn river. Here is one of many bridges (Brücken) over the Inn. This one is a covered footbridge.

Looking across the Inn, up into the Alps. We had very beautiful weather on Friday.

As in Salzburg, the river in Innsbruck is green from the minerals coming down from the Alps.

I love the eastern style of the churches here, and the bright, cheerful colors you see them painted. (There's another one here.)

Inside the Weiss Kreuz hotel where we had lunch in Innsbruck. This is a very Catholic region, and it's not unusual to find yourself eating beneath a crucifix like the one you see on the wall here.

Another view of the interior of the restaurant.

In the mountains over Hall in Tirol, looking across the valley (Tal).

Another picture of the Alps over Hall.

By the time we left Sunday, the upper third of all these mountains was covered with snow.

Another crucifix, this one up in the mountains on the side of the road.

Gasthof Badl, where we spent two nights. It is in Hall in Tirol.

Our view from the window of Gasthof Badl.

The old mint tower of Hall in Tirol. In the castle is the Berg Taverne, where we ate dinner Saturday night.

An evening street scene in Hall in Tirol. This was a quiet little town with a very nice Altstadt. Much less touristy than Innsbruck, and just as beautiful.

I found this fountain fascinating. I'm not sure why. Three little bare-assed children stand up on top of the tall part, and three frogs sit below.

It's almost as if they're transfixed... hypnotized by the frogs...

Have you ever seen anything so manipulative?

Marty in the mountains, beside the A-Class (the car). I bet you've never seen a Mercedes that looks like that before.
