Savage Cookies

Savage Cookies (Grr!)A wonderful cookie recipe from Laura, who got it from her neighbor, Mrs. Savage. These molasses cookies are old-fashioned and yummy. Make a double recipe or they'll be gone way too fast!

Ingredients:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (tightly packed)
  • 1/2 cup Grandma's brand molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teasp. baking soda

Method

  1. Place butter and raisins into a bowl and set over a pan of hot water on the stove until butter melts and raisins have plumped. [I actually just put them in a saucepan directly on the stovetop, and that works fine.]

  2. Beat the egg and mix with the butter and raisins. Mix in the remaining ingredients.

  3. Chill overnight or for several hours until quite stiff.

  4. Break off pieces of dough about the size of a walnut and roll in the palms of the hands until rounded, then roll in granulated sugar to coat the ball. Place about 1 1/2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Cookies tend to brown on bottom, so be careful.  Makes a large 3-inch cookie which is soft, not crisp.
